COFFKA will be shown at Seattle’s True Independent Film Festival (STIFF) on the evening of June 13th, 2010. This will be the film’s first festival screening; and since STIFF chose it to end their 10-day event, you know it’s gonna be good!

We were fortunate enough to be interviewed on one of Seattle’s leading weekend talk shows. The Soul of Seattle is hosted by the venerable Jacques Pugh. The Soul of Seattle airs every Sunday from 10am to 11am on 1090AM.

The esteemed producer of Coffka, Matthew Haak, was interviewed. He represented Coffka well and did his best to inform his fellow Seattleites of the green art that is being produced in the area. Jacques said that it was a really fun interview to do and anyone who listens to it can tell that there was a great deal of energy in the studio when they recorded it. The interview revolved around the challenges of making a green movie and all the effort that went into pre production, production, and post production.

Coffka Submitted To SIFF – Seattle International Film Festival

We got it done on time! With only a couple hours to spare, we hand delivered Coffka to the SIFF office in downtown Seattle. We will be on pins and needles for the next couple weeks while we wait to hear if we get accepted.

We can’t wait for everyone to see it at SIFF on the big screen. What an adventure.

Now that it is complete we can honestly say that the movie is GOOD. When someone takes into consideration all the obstacles, challenges, tight budget, and impossible time frame the movie is just that much more magical. When we started this project over a year ago we put together a list of objectives. Now that we are done and reflecting on all of our goals we can honestly say that we blew all of our goals out of the water. Every aspect of the movie is better than we planned when we started.

Our goals were to: 1. Make a green movie using the least amount of resources as possible. Check. 2. Tell a compelling story that nobody has ever seen before. Check. 2. Have great cinematography and sound. Check. 4. Us the absolute best local talent that money can’t buy. Check. 4. Make the best feature length, $3000, movie ever made. Check!

The movie is beautiful and compelling, artistic and accessible, thought provoking and funny. We have it all. Every person involved in the project has been amazing. You all know who you are…. Thanks!

Whats next?

In the coming weeks we will be telling you about the radio interview that we did, posting more blog entries about our actors, and we will be putting up cast interviews soon. We need a little break but we will be putting together a trailer soon. Keep your eyes on OUR SITE to be the first ones to know what is new.

After a short vacation we are glad to be back and blogging again. We literally have been working so hard on the movie that we just could not even squeeze out 20 minutes to do a shout out to all our fans. That is how dedicated we are to making this the best $3000 movie ever.

Symetra Building – On Location

This shoot took us across Lake Washington into the heart of Bellevue Washington. The Symetra building is amazing and the grounds are well groomed. It was our first choice and it perfectly represents the place of employment for characters Marcus and Clay. The opening scene of the movie takes place at the Symetra building and it takes off with a bang!

Left to right we have Mike Gaston our esteemed cinematographer, Glenn Allyn our fearless director, Ryan Cooper (Marcus), and Jayson Kochan. They all gather around the monitor to take a look at the last take… which was wonderful by the way.

Whats with the blood? You better get that checked out! I hope that we don’t have a workman’s comp claim on our hands…

Doctor’s Office – On Location

One would think that booking a shoot at a doctor’s office would be easy… right? There are hundreds of doctors. offices spread around the the Seattle area… easy right? WRONG! This was the absolute hardest location for the producer and Coffka team to nail down. They finally found one and it was absolutely perfect.

We have to thank Paul Eenhoorn for this shoot. He really made the part of Dr. Shey come alive. We get goosebumps every time we think about it.

We can’t tell if this is one of those ominous stares (and terrific acting) or if it is just really late. By this time of the evening we were all a little tired. We started filming that day at 6am and went until 11pm and did not wrap and get back to Seattle until midnight! These guys are real troopers and consumate professionals. There is not a better crew in the world!

Venus Cafe / Marsbar – On Location

Things continue to motor right along. We can not believe all the exciting places that we have had the privilege to film. The Venus Cafe is one of those places. The atmosphere is electric and the food is out of this world. If you are looking for a great place for a lazy Saturday or Sunday morning breakfast then this is the place. We had the privilege of filming in the Mars Bar and could not be happier with the location and the owners.

We had the pleasure to cast the venerable Aaron Washington for the part of Leo – the bar owner. He could not have been more professional on the set. He really “brings it” – his smile is infectious, he is an amazing actor and he made this day of shooting fun.

This whole project would not happen if it were no for people like Mike Gaston. He is one of the most talented people we have ever met. We would also like to thank Sam for playing Derrik the DJ.

Jayson Kochan – Cast Member Exposé

Basically this movie would not work without Jayson! He is one of the hardest working actors we have ever met. He took the most difficult character in the entire movie, Clay, and made him come to life. He officially gets the “least like his character” award.

Jayson has called Seattle home for nearly two years. Since his big move from Portland, Oregon, he has appeared in independent movies such as Render Me Dead and The Reel Life. In his spare time, Jayson enjoys playing experimental/lo-fi dance music in his one-man band Airport, as well as watching America’s Next Top Model with his lovely girlfriend, Jessi, and their two dogs.

Nina Carduner – Cast Member Exposé

In our ongoing series, we are highlighting the incredible actors and actresses who have signed up to work with us on Coffka. Next up is the incredibly talented actress, Nina Carduner. We are blessed to have her. She has brought so much talent and energy to the project that it spreads to everyone on the set. She is a real professional who continues to do whatever it takes to make every shoot as good as it can be. We are very happy to have the privelage of working with her.

Nina is a recent transplant from the Bay Area in N. California. After graduating from Beloit College with a B.A. in acting, she worked in the commercial print industry and fringe theater scene of San Francisco. There, she collaborated with the experimental theater group, Naked Maskes, in the world premier of “No Such Thing,” written and directed by Jonathan Vandenburg. She also appeared on stage with the Actor’s Ensemble of Berkeley as Lampito in “Lysistrata.” In Seattle, she continues to cultivate her craft with a focus in film. This will be her first feature-length.

Filming Has Begun – Urban Coffee Lounge

Filming has begun. We don’t think that things could go much better than they have. It is quite amazing. Our crew is simply amazing and our actors are first rate.

We would like to personally thank the Urban Coffee Lounge for letting us use their business for filming. Everyone there was accommodating and professional. Not to mention that they have the best coffee in town and highly skilled baristas! Make sure that you stop in the next time you are in the Juanita Bay area.
